SARANAC LAKE — The
Community Store Project organizers are gearing up to sell shares.
The group has drafted the necessary documents for selling shares and
expect to submit it to the proper state authorities by April 1,
organizer Melinda Little said. The documents are currently being
reviewed by Lake Placid attorney Charles Noth, who was hired by the
group.
Once the paperwork gets approved, the organizers plan to sell shares
for $100 each, with a per-person limit of $10,000. The original cost of
shares proposed last summer had been higher, but organizer Gail Brill
said this will further allow the “possibility that more community
members will be able to buy shares.”
“Our intent is to start locally, then we’ll extend it as needed,”
Little said.
By law, anyone in New York state can purchase the shares.
Before organizers start selling, Brill said they have one big goal.
“We’re hoping to have a storefront in town by the time we’re selling
shares,” she said.
They have looked at several storefronts recently, including the former
Meyer’s Hallmark gift shop location and another on Upper Broadway,
Brill said.
The Upper Broadway location has been ruled out, Brill said, but the
Meyer’s location is still a possibility. Community store organizers are
having an engineer assess the building to determine if it will be
suitable for them, Brill said.
The most difficult
part about the process of getting the store started is finding a space,
Brill said, asking that anyone who knows of one available to contact
her.
The store is expected to carry clothing, shoes, linens, towels, sewing
materials and other items that Ames used to, Little said.
The group has also formed an interim board to sell shares. It consists
of Little, Brill, Saranac Lake bed and breakfast owner Alan Brown,
Keene resident Lorraine Duvall, Scott’s Florist owner Kathryn
Steinbrueck, Books and Baskets owner Tracy Santagate and former Tupper
Lake Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jon Kopp. Brill said they
are still looking for more people to join the board, specifically from
Lake Placid and Wilmington.
