Angus Robertson, visiting from the Isle of Skye – located off the coast of Scotland – paid a visit to Saranac Lake and The Community Store this past month. As part of a tour of the New England states, Mr. Robertson and one of his contacts stateside, Paul Bruhn, spent a good bit of time taking in the community and The Community Store. Please refer to the article that was run in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise (posted in our “In the News” section). We want to thank Mr. Robertson and Mr. Bruhn for taking time to visit with us and hope that the information and insights that they left with were helpful.

The Community Store – Ethical Sourcing Policy

by General Manager on September 26, 2013

At the Annual Shareholders meeting this past August, we shared our “Ethical Sourcing Policy” with those in attendance. Below is posted this policy that has been developed by the Board of Directors for The Community Store.

Ethical Sourcing Policy

The Community Store is committed to providing customers with affordable, quality goods that have been manufactured and shipped in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations and industry standards.

In order to ensure this, The Community Store has put in place a process for working with its vendor/partners to ensure that their global suppliers are meeting the ethical sourcing standards as outlined and monitored by organizations such as the Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (http://wrapcompliance.org.)

These standards include but are not limited to:

  • Providing workers with a safe and      healthy workplace.
  • A zero-tolerance for exploitative      or abusive workplace conditions once known.
  • Compliance with all national and      local laws and regulations.
  • Providing workers with a fair      wage, that is at least in line with the minimum wage required by local law      and shall provide legally mandated benefits.
  • Ensuring that workers have      appropriate time off and that they are not required to work excessive      overtime hours.
  • Compensation for overtime hours      at such premium rate as is legally required in the country of manufacture      or, in countries where such laws do not exist, at a rate at least equal to      their regular hourly compensation rate.
  • Compliance with environmental      rules, regulations and standards applicable to their operations.

All existing vendor/partners and future vendor/partners will be required annually to outline their global sourcing policies and procedures. If a vendor/partner is unwilling to do so, The Community Store will not purchase product through that source.

The Community Store recognizes that such a policy will not be relevant to all of its vendor/partners because of their size (ie. local artisans) and will waive the requirement in those cases.

Did You Know?

by General Manager on September 7, 2013

The Community Store has gone through many changes over the past year and we invite you to stop in and take a look! Our “home essentials” department has added many items for the kitchen, an expanded bath and bedding area and more. Over the next few months look for some new and well known brands to be added to the mix.

We are always trying to add new titles of interest to our small, but relevant, book section. If there is a “title of interest” that deals with the region – let us know and we will see if we can add that to our list of available titles.

Every Monday we “celebrate” our Senior Citizens by offering a 10% discount off of their purchase. Anyone who is 62 “years young”, just let us know at time of checkout and we will be happy to extend that discount to you. Just Remember – Monday’s are Seniors Day!

Starting this month (September) we will be launching our “Local Discount Day”. The third Thursday of every month we will offer all local residents a 10% discount off of their purchase. All we ask – please – present us a current Drivers License showing residency in the Tri-Lakes area and we will be happy to extend this offer to you. Please, one discount per month, per person.

But don’t wait for these days to pay us a visit! Every week we are bringing in something new and changing things up. Some of these special buys don’t last long so for best selection – make us a stop on your visits to Downtown Saranac Lake.

The Community Store – open seven days a week – conveniently located next to the Public Library. DISCOVER US TODAY!
